D.V.S* (Derek VanScoten) - Coming Up for Air Vol. 2

The naming of D.V.S*’s dual album, Coming Up for Air: Vol. 1 (DUSK) and Vol. 2 (DAWN) (Self-Released on Bandcamp, 2011), demonstrates the duality inherent to Derek’s musical proclivities.  On one side is DUSK; the coming of night, new opportunities to unchain the soul, fresh moments to dance the day to sleep.  The other side is DAWN; the sun’s return—another celestial launch of earthly life.  With DUSK, he exhibits his hyphy side, with glitched-out wobbles riding hip-hop crests.   With DAWN, a lighter sensibility is showcased, one that any fan of downtempo, airy beats would call love at first sight.  D.V.S* has used the term “skygaze” (see: opposite of shoegazing) to describe this latter experience, and aptly so, as listening to DAWN conjures images of lying in a field staring at clouds or constellations drifting along their path in our sky.  Uniting these disparate realms is D.V.S*, a beatsmith with one hand on a guitar and the other on a MIDI controller.  With Coming Up for Air, he creates a nexus for the analog and digital fronts charging at the contemporary music scene, the consummate working example of future music.

D.V.S* has released Volume 2 of his dual album, Coming Up for Air (Volume 1 was released earlier this year).  Pick it up here for $7 (or stream it free below).  D.V.S* has a few shows coming up in Colorado in a week or so with Emancipator, if you are in the area do not miss this show.

Beam&Deam - Eight Sided EP

Hailing from Philly, Beam&Deem (carefully spelled sans spaces but with an ampersand) is a duo of future music imagineers (Zach Catarelli&Chris Coffey) that is definitely worth your attention.  Head to their site and pick up the free download of their recent Eight Sided EP, an eight track exploration which they aptly describe as:

"Eight Sided" is the culmination of Beam&Deem's studio efforts throughout the past 6 months. Meticulously crafted in our home studio in West Philadelphia, this EP delivers eight tracks that represent the unique sound Beam&Deem has brought to the ever expanding universe of electronic music.

Although each track holds up independently, "Eight Sided" is designed to be listened to as a whole; a half hour sonic journey through ethereal soundscapes and strong emotions, with subtle changes in tempo, obscure time signatures, and repeating themes throughout. Melodically driven with infectious rhythms, lush audio samples, and carefully designed synths, this release reaches new heights of experimentation and progression in our sound.
