Projexions #4: Beat Repeat Down the Street
Projexions A familiar thought entered my mind last weekend as I drove down a stretch of Minnesota highway—I wish my steering wheel had a MIDI control surface.
Think about it. You’re a producer/DJ/electronic music hobbyist. Nothing excites you more than the thought of hours spent alone in the studio tweaking sounds, building beats—and here you are sitting in a car, driving, listening to the radio, a CD or some kind of digital music player. The music is static, you have no control over the sonic landscape…well, a steering wheel MIDI control surface returns your hands to the reigns. Nothing fancy, mind you. Maybe a couple knobs, pads and sliders, or some combination. A touch screen device, probably an iPad, mounted in the dash could adjust parameters and potentially run a version of Ableton Live or some like-minded program. Granted, this probably sounds insane to a non-producer/DJ, and in the eyes of state and federal regulators would be legally irrational and a sign of the ineptitude of our generation, but for those of us who wouldn’t mind throwing in a filter sweep or a couple seconds of beat repeat to liven a stale radio playlist, it sounds perfectly rad.
What do you think, have we lost our sodding mind? Too distracting? Savior of long commutes? Leave a comment here let us know what you think.
