Projexions #2: Future Music & the iPad

With the much anticipated and heralded annoucement made by Apple's Steve Jobs January 27th finally come and gone from tech circles' obsession, the dust and hoopla surrounding the iPad is winding down. While analysts, business leaders and consumers begin to tackle just what exactly the iPad is, 507projex is speculating over possible revolutions in the world of future music production, and live electronic music performance, that may arise from such a thin, multi-touch device.

While our homies over at Create Digital Music have found numerous flaws in the iPad, as far as music producers/visual artists go there may be a niche area of use that could have unexpected benefits. Think about applications that could mimic drum machines, monomes, or even, serve as a multi-touch controller to rival the twice-the-price Jazz Mutant Lemur. If software like this was developed for the iPad, one could spend the $4-699 on that single device, and then purchase applications that rival said drum machines and the like--and you wouldn't have to buy them individually.

Just a thought. I personally have this fantasy of three or four around me during a live performance...my limbs flailing at them in search of beat repeat, filters and sequencers. We shall have to wait until the iPad is released into the wild, see what consumers and developers actually use the device for--before we should rush to judgement.
